A good place to start if you quickly want to learn your moves in BZflag. Doesn't beat a lot of practice though!
180 Degree Spin Jump
Execution
The easiest move of them all, if not for driving your tank.
All you need to do is start turning fully left or right -while you're driving or not- a fraction of a second before you jump. When you land -4 seconds later- your tank will have rotated 180 degrees.
Often used in combination with other moves.
Tips
- Think twice before executing any jump, since you have no directional control in mid-air.
- If you're being chased from behind, use this move only as a last resort; driving around or jumping on top of a building would be far better.
Facing "S" Assault
Execution
In a medium or long range frontal assault situation this move is your best buddy. Why? Because it takes away the need to jump by providing you a controlled way to dodge those bullets.
- When you and your opponent are closing in on each other, don't shoot untill at medium range.
- When you're close enough or when your opponent opens fire, shoot and quickly turn left or right (whichever route is free of bullets).
- Watch your radar and fine-tune your course to evade any incoming bullets.
- As soon as you're clear turn back, and fire again once you have a good aim.
- Repeat until one of you is finished.
- When you're both still alive and getting too close for this tactic to work, then...and only then...consider jumping.
Tips
- Don't shoot too early.
- Use the window for aiming only; keep your ball on the radar.
- U nlikely to work at close range.
- The first jumper is dead...don't let it be you.
Jump Toaster
Execution
When you see a tank jump...he's toast. Your toast. You may prepare this delightful meal with some bullet spray on his estimated landing spot.
Tips
- Don't spray too rapidly, use a one second interval in between every bullet.
Ricochet Resque
Execution
Sometimes there can be an easy way out of a tricky situation. The Ricochet Resque is one of those easy ways, but only if all of the following conditions are met:
- You're being persued at close range
- You're approaching a building and are nearly there
- Ricochet is enabled on the server or you have the Ricochet (R) flag
Got all that? Great! Approach the wall of the nearest building head-on, fire a few shots at it, and jump on top. With any luck you got your tailing attacker totally by surprise and you'll have the pleasure of watching his dot on the radar screen move into oblivion.
Tips
- Get the timing right; it's the most important factor here.
- Try combining this with the 180 Degree Spin Jump.
Cascade Jump
Execution
A common situation is where you'll find yourself on a structure higher than that of your opponent. In such a case he has to jump in order to shoot you, and you have got little choice but to wait (unless you have a Shockwave flag of course).
A 50/50 winning chance you think? Try 100/0 tank commander, provided patience and concentration are amongst your skills.
Patience. Always wait for him to jump, while keeping your barrel pointed at him at all times.
Concentrate. If he jumps, you spray some bullets over his head and jump too.
Disaster will come swift for your enemy. His jump will get his head chopped of, while you cleverly jump over his discharged ammo.
Tips
- If your nemesis is too close to see, rely on your zoomed-in radar (without forgetting your environment). You should be able to detect his jump. Alternatively, you could execute the Fallout at this moment. If on the other hand he has Stealth...move!
- If you've been given 3 or more bullets on a server you have the option to fire a constant spray of bullets, evenly spaced out, over your opponents head.
- One counter-move your opponent could make is to zig-zag his tank, trying to drive you nuts.
- Whatever you do...do not go down when your opponent is facing you from below!
Fallout
Execution
Ever found yourself on the edge of a building with an enemy right below, your nerves doing overwork, and you're out of patience? Want an alternative to the Cascade Jump?
Be original! Try falling of a building while driving backwards. You'll be facing your opponent upon landing. Good odds hey?
Odds are even better in a ricochet enabled world. Pretent you're playing snooker for a while, aim, and drive of a building under a slight angle. Upon landing, shoot the wall. However, be aware: If your nemesis is quick those same rico bullets could be used against you.
Tips
- Try this a few times on buildings of different levels of elevation and get a feel for the timing involved.
- Watch your back (radar zoomed in all the way) while getting ready for your fall...if he jumps, you jump too (backwards)!
- Got bullets to spare? Consider shooting while falling.
Oscillation JoJo
Execution
Now this can make your opponent go nuts! All you need is to be inside a building with an Oscillation Overthruster (OO) flag, another building nearby and a victem in between.
A classic OO stalemate has developed. But...it doesn't need to be that way.
Try charging out of your shelter (bluf a bit first), fire bullets the moment you are unsealed, followed by a 180 Degree Spin Jump into the next building. Quickly execute the move again from the other side if you failed to do your job on the first jump. Beware of any bouncing bullets though.
A really cool variant on this would be to hold your fire on the first jump, enabling you to jump sooner. Upon landing inside the other building, immediately perform a second jojo with shooting. Surprise!
Tips
- Watch out for tanks on top of nearby buildings, especially Guided Missiles.
- Distance between buildings, calling bluf and good timing is of the essence; practice this move first and develope a feel for it.
- As always when you have the oscillation Overthruster (OO), keep a close eye on any Shockwave (SW) and Super Bullet (SB) equipped tank; if such a tank is your opponent either finish him off at medium distance or run away.
- Try combining this with shooting under angles or turning while jumping.
Oscillation Rico
Execution
For use between two battling Oscillation Overthruster tanks. You'll also be needing two nearby buildings and a ricochet enabled world.
The basic move is executed by emerging from one building while firing at the opposing one. After firing you jump -evading your own rico bullets- and if you can, fire some more bullets in mid-air. Land inside the next building and watch your radar screen for any signs of devestation.
It is an ideal trick to lure unsuspecting OO newbies behind you into a trap. When emerging from the building they might think you're an easy target, and consequently decide to follow you with the plan to shoot you from behind. Well, lets hope your nemesis was insured.
This move is also the safest mode of travel from one building to the next with your OO flag, unless the distance between buildings is very short.
Tips
- Watch out for tanks on top of nearby buildings, especially Guided Missiles.

Corner Cutter
Execution
Don't you just hate it when you round the corner of a building and get shot before you could even round your turn? Well I do, so lets put an entertainment factor in rounding corners!
Turn into the wall just before you would normally round a corner, and do this under a slight angle (30 degrees or so). Your tank will happily slide along the wall towards the corner. When you pass it, your barrel will be facing an utterly surprised opponent!
Tips
- Especially groovy with the High Speed (V) flag; sliding is now 50% faster and 200% more dangerous.
- Execute this move well and to your opponent it will even seem like you have the Quick Turn (A) flag at the same time with whatever flag you have. You even might leave your opponent thinking you are cheating because he obviously sees you 'rounding' corners ultra fast; be prepared for possible accusations (just refer them to this guide to prevent/settle any argument).
Fly Swatter
Execution
Notice somebody jumping of a high structure? You're on a structure too, but lower?
Be fast. Estimate where he will fall, and 1 or 2 seconds before he's about to pass through your line of fire, you shoot a steady wave of bullets through it. Use a 250ms spread or so.
If you timed and aimed well, you'll be granted the honour of gazing at a wonderfully orchestrated mid-air explosion.
Who said BZFlag didn't have fireworks?
Tips
- It is rather essential that you roughly know the lag of each tank. Use '/lagstats' once in a while, if you're not engaged in battle, to refresh your mind.
